#TriConf24: The Secrets of Purpose-driven Leaders

Please note: These live learning blogs are posted on the fly, and I am more concerned with capturing information rather than perfecting my writing/proofreading skills. So yes, there might be mistakes, and no, it’s not the next great American novel. We’ll live!

Purpose – a stable intention that is meaningful to self and beneficial/consequential to the world

When we increase meaning in our lives, we need to build in extra support. These supports help us be our both selves.

Having a purpose statement is great, but it really doesn’t mean anything if you don’t do anything with it. “Purpose is a verb.” (The English teacher in me takes issue with that, since clearly “purpose” is a noun, but for the catchiness of it and to just go with it, I’ll allow it – haha).

Purpose statement formula:

I _____ (verb/your gift)____ so that _____(effect/impact).

Then we moved on to purpose map:

In the center, write your purpose statement.

  • Identities and privilege: Who are you and what makes you you?
  • Communities: What communities are you in and why do you trust them?
  • Sounding board: Makes you be the best you can be. Who do you go to when you just need to vent? When you have a problem you can’t solve and need to brainstorm? Accountability buddy? Mentor? Role model? Wildly different political perspective, challenges you?
  • Daily practices: we as humans are constantly looking for habits (trigger/stimulus, habit, reward). What is the thing you do every day?
  • Natural gifts:
  • Purpose goal/next step:

We weren’t able to finish the purpose map, but we’ll do it for homework. Once again, I didn’t take a ton of notes – I was too engaged in the activities. This post might seem incomplete, but whatevs!
