This post is a bit of a #latergram, since it’s about a trip from over a week ago, but I’ve been too lazy to write until now.

Este post es un poquito de #latergram porque es sobre un viaje desde hace una semana, pero he estado perezosa y no lo escribí hasta ahora. 

Last weekend, a group of us went on an excursion that was a little different from our normal trips. The impetus for the escapadita was the fact that it was a new moon during dry season, and we wanted to have the opportunity to see the Milky Way Band.  So, we found a house outside Cartago, which is about an hour outside San Jose.

El finde pasado, un grupo de mis amigos y yo fuimos para un paseo que era diferente de nuestros viajes normales. El ímpetu era que habrá una nueva luna durante el verano, y queríamos aprovechar la oportunidad de ver la banda de la Via Láctea. Por eso, encontramos una casa cerca de Cartago, lo que está como una hora de San Jose. 

The weekend started out great because it was only about an hour drive, as opposed to the normal three or so hours that it takes to get to the beach. Not only was the ride quick, but it was also gorgeous! We drove the back roads through the mountains, which had lots of gorgeous views.

El finde empezó bien porque el viaje solo duró como una hora, al contrario del viaje a la playa, que es tres horas más o menos. ¡También el viaje fue bellísimo! Manejamos por las calles del campo en las montañas, que tuvieron vistas muy lindas. 

After a lovely ride, we ended up at the house, which was about 20 minutes up the mountain from the actual city of Cartago (here’s the airbnb listing in case you want to check it out!). I couldn’t believe how amazing the view was, especially during golden hour, which is when we arrived. I also couldn’t believe how cold it was! And yes, I mean COLD. Not just Costa Rica cold. Because of the altitude, it was much colder than San Jose. I was mildly prepared with long pants and a couple of sweatshirts, but if I go back, for sure I’ll bring a hat and gloves!

Después del viaje, llegamos a la casa, que está como 20 minutos de la ciudad de Cartago (aquí está la página de la casa en airbnb si la quiere). La vista era increíble; ¡no pude creerlo! ¡Tampoco no pude creer el frío! Y sí, digo FRÍO. No solamente el frío de Costa Rica. Por la altitud, hacía más frío que San Jose. Yo estaba más o menos preparada con pantalones y sueteres, pero si voy de nuevo, es seguro que llevo guantes y un gorro! 

My friend Megan and I went for a run pretty much right away, so that we didn’t have to run in the dark. We actually ended up walking most of it, due to the altitude and the fact that the trails were extremely uneven. It was a great way to get some exercise and also see the sunset from lots of different angles! Here are some photos…#nofilter!

Mi amiga Megan y yo corrimos apenas de llegar, para que no hayamos tenido que correr sin sol. Al final, caminamos la mayoría, por la altitud y porque la via estaba desnivelada. Pero igual, fue una forma muy buena hacer ejercicio y ver el atardecer de diferentes ángulos. Aquí están algunas fotos…#sinfiltro!

After the sunset, we went to dinner for our friend’s birthday, and everyone hit the hay early, due to the fact that we were going to wake up at 2am to stargaze! It was so amazing; the sky was so clear, and the stars were shining brightly! The Band wasn’t as prominent as pictures you’ll find online, but it was still worth waking up in the middle of the night and freezing our patooties off!!

Después del atardecer, fuimos para la cena y celebrar el cumple de nuetra amiga, y todo el mundo se durmió temprano, por que ibamos despertarnos a las 2 en la mañana para ver a las estrellas! Estaba muy increíble; el cielo estaba muy claro y las estrellas brillaron mucho. La banda de la Via Láctea no fue tan prominente como las fotos en linea, pero igual, valió la pena de despertarnos y sobrevivir el frío.

Saturday was yet another awesome day, starting with a delicious breakfast of pinto and other typical food, plus a fresh strawberry batido. Yum! After breakfast, we headed to Prusia, a park inside the Irazú National Park, and which also just happens to be one of my favorite places to hike in Costa Rica. It’s definitely different from what you might picture when you think of Costa Rica; there are no waterfalls or swimming holes. It’s more like an enchanted forest, with micro-micro-climates. One second you’ll feel like you’re hiking in the forest in California, and the next you might think you’re in the Northeast…the smell of pine needles reminds me of home. There is also a cursed tree in the middle of the forest, which is pretty cool for photo shoots.

El sábado también estaba lindíssimo, del desayuno rico de pinto y otra comida típica, más un batido de fresa. Yum! Después del desayuno, fuimos a Prusia, un parque a dentro del parque nacional irazú, que también es mi favorito lugar para hacer caminatas en Costa Rica. Seguramente es diferente de que esperas de Costa Rica; no hay cataratas ni pozos. Es más como un bosque encantado, con micro-micro-climas. En un momento es como si estuvieras en California, y en el próximo momento es como si estuvieras en el noreste…olió como los pinos de new jersey. También hay un árbol embrujado, que es bien cool para las fotos. 

Sadly, my fitbit died during the hike, so I’m not sure how far we went, but it didn’t die before I was able to run a mile along the trails (only on the flat and downhill parts…haha). It was a super fun way to spend time with friends, enjoy the sunshine, get some exercise, and just generally enjoy the day.

Lamentablemente, mi fitbit se murió durante la caminata. Por eso, no estoy segura de la distancia de la caminata, pero no se murió antes de corrí 1.6 km en los senderos (solamente cuando estaba plano o de descenso…jajaja). Fue una forma muy divertida pasar tiempo con amigos, disfrutar el sol, hacer ejercicios, y generalmente disfrutar el día. 

After the hike, we headed for a delicious linner of typical food (I love me some post-hike arroz con pollo!), and then headed home for yet another beautiful sunset. I stayed up “late” (like 10:30) binge reading Dumplin‘, so I skipped the second 2am stargazing sesh.

Después de la caminata, fuimos para un “almuena” de comida tipica (me encanta arroz con pollo después de caminar) y entonces fuimos para ver otro lindo atardecer. Me dormí tarde (como a las 10:30) leyendo Dumplin’; por eso no me desperté a las 2am para ver a las estrellas. 

Since we were only an hour from home, we were in no rush to get back on Sunday, so we decided to take advantage and have some more adventures. Pod, Chris, and I woke up early and headed further up the mountain to Parque Nacional Irazú. I’ve been there before, but it’s always fun to see the crater on a clear day. It was awesome because there was hardly anyone there, due to the fact that we arrived so early. We hung around taking pics and enjoying the day, and then went for a delicious breakfast of, yes, you guessed it, more pinto.

Estábamos sólo una hora de San Jose. Por eso, no había prisa de regresar el domingo. Entonces, decidimos aprovechar y hacer mas aventuras. Pod, Chris, y yo nos despertamos temprano y fuimos más arriba por la montaña a parque nacional irazú. He ido allí antes, pero siempre es divertido ver el crater en un día claro. Estaba muy chiva porque no había mucha gente, porque llegamos muy temprano. Nos quedamos allí por un rato, tomando fotos y disfrutando el día, y después fuimos para un desayuno muy delicioso de (por supuesto) más pinto. 

After Irazú, we went and hung out at the house a while longer, just lying in the grass soaking up the sun (a bit too much, since I ended up getting sunburned…whoops). Then we began the journey home, with a quick stop at the botanical gardens in Cartago, and for some delicious burgers at a local haunt, Pandas, back in Moravia.

Después de irazú, fuimos y nos quedamos en la casa por un ratito mas. Nos acostamos en el césped, disfrutando el sol (un poquito demasiado porque me quemé…upps). Después empezamos el viaja a san jose, con un alto en el jardín botánico en Cartago, y para algunas hamburguesas ricas en Pandas en moravia. (Alguién me dice si lugares como “cartago” y “san jose” necesita mayusculas porfa!)

That pretty much put an end to a super fun weekend, and thus comes the end of this post! Pura vida!
